Time is a critical determining factor in whether someone survives a cardiac arrest. The survival rate falls approximately 10% for every minute following collapse, until defibrillation.
Ambulance Victoria 2023/24 figures show that 47% of the patients who received bystander defibrillation survived to hospital discharge, compared with 32% of patients who were first shocked by Emergency Services (EMS).
